Call for Participation

Mobile Summit Brochure

This 2-day summit presents a unique opportunity for people from academia and the industry to meet and discuss the opportunities and challenges that mobile devices provide, and find ways to promote collaboration. Participation in this summit is open to people from the Middle East and Pakistan, who are:

  • Faculty members at higher educational institutions
  • Students (undergraduate and graudate)
  • Local developers and entrepreneurs
  • Members of the business, government, and developer communities

Day 1 of the summit features keynote presentations, case studies, and discussion panels by academic and industry leaders.

Day 2 of the summit will be devoted to hands-on sessions for faculty, students, and others interested in learning about mobile application development for BlackBerry devices (smartphones and tablet computers). Participants will:

  • Learn about and experiment with development tools
  • Practice developing and deploying a new application
  • Explore some of the tools for teaching & learning.
Participants in the hands-on sessions should bring their own laptops, so all the tools are installed and ready for developing apps.

Day 2 Hands-on Session 1

In this session participants will learn about mobile application development models and tools, and practice developing and deploying a new application. They will learn about best practices in teaching mobile application development, and explore some of the tools for teaching and learning. Topics include:
  • Mobile application development models and tradeoffs (browser vs. native)
  • Introduction to development languages supported (Java, C++, scripting)
  • Introduction to software development tools (browser & native)
  • Getting started with BB dev with HTML5 WebWorks
  • Deploying apps on BB smartphones and PlayBook
  • Overview of BBM SDK, BB10, Cascade framework
  • Best practices (and support tools & resources) in teaching mobile app development across the curricula
  • Developing and publishing an app

Day 2 Hands-on Session 2

This session is intended for those with advanced skills. In this session participants will get an overview of RIM development tools, including Java, C++, HTML5 WebWorks, BBM SDK, BB10, NDK, and Cascade. Topics include:
  • Introduction to BB dev with Java
  • Introduction to BB dev with HTML5 WebWorks
  • Introduction to the BBM SDK
  • Introduction to BB10 with NDK and Cascade
